3 girls, 4 wheels, 6 legs, 2 holding hands and a partridge in a pear tree..

The Circe Helios tandem has arrived! It’s surprisingly comfy and surprisingly fast – at least it was until I added one handlebar bag, 2 racks, 2 mudguards, 4 panniers, Molly on my rear and a trailer’ed Daisy on her rear.

As soon as the tandem arrived on our shores Gary has been busy cutting bits off here and adding bits there.

For the bike boffins, here’s what we have done so far:

Added 150 cranks for me, 130’s for Molly.

Changed the stem to shorten the reach.

Chopped both my and Molly handlebars to narrow them – put Esge grips on mine and put the original front grips onto Molly’s ‘bars.

Swapped the tyres for Schwalbe Marathon Plus.

Put on my old rat-trap pedals (off my 1984 Stumpjumper) with toe clips. Taken the pedals that came with the Nihola Gay and put them on for Molly with clips and straps.

Changed the 23 back-end sprocket for an 18 and changed main drive chainring from 48 to 33 (sent fast from Spa Cycles!)

To get front Blackburn Low Rider to fit Gary adapted car exhaust U-clamps (the front forks are too fat for original fittings) before attacking one of my kitchen plastic chopping boards to use as a type of washer.

Departure for Land’s End has been delayed a bit as Gary has been trying to find an appropriate slot in his work to stop building so that he can start the jolly jaunt with us and see whether he thinks I can cope alone with two boisterous offspring on board.

So, if all goes to plan (and so often it doesn’t) we should be at Land’s End with our assortment of multiple wheels towards the end of next week. From there we point our helm in a general north-to-north-east direction and hope for hills that we don’t notice and a sun to shine.
